Connect a Device to the "NMU" WiFi Network

Keep the following things in mind while registering:

• You must be on-campus and using the NMU WiFi or Ethernet network to register.
• Your NMU account must be active in order to have computers and devices registered.
• You are limited to registering 3 LTE sim cards per account.
• You are limited to registering 3 devices per account if they are registered using the method on this page (if they are registered using "https://www-register.nmu.edu/device" page)
• There is no limit to the number of computers or phones you can register (meaning they are registered using their built-in web-browser and using the "https://www-register.nmu.edu/register" page instead of the page that ends in '/device').
• Please note that your NMU ID will be attached to each computer you register, and you will be responsible for the actions performed using this machine, including those that violate NMU's copyright and acceptable use policies.
• In specific cases where you need to access the internet via both wireless and wired internet, you might need to register the device twice, once for each type of connection. This is not always required though, most NMU issues devices do not need to be registered twice.
• Not all smart devices will work on NMU's campus network. Most smart devices (such as: internet connected speakers, printers, Alexa speakers, etc) are meant to work on a small home network rather than a large campus or business network. Any device that has it's own form of wifi router will not work with our system. That includes some wireless speakers, such as Sonos, some smart home devices, some wifi printers, and more.

This page deals mainly with registering devices other than phones or computers, meaning the devices this page is for are devices that do not typically come pre-installed with a web browser. These can be IOT devices, gaming consoles, smart tvs, any smart device, or any general smart-home devices. For computers or phones, please visit the following links:

First: Find Your Device's MAC Address

Please note: it is impossible for us to document the process of locating the MAC Address of every console there is out there. However, for the big three most popular consoles (in no specific order) follow these links to locate your console's MAC Address before proceeding to the steps in the section below:

Second: Register Your Device Using the MAC Address

1. First you need to find the device's MAC address & attempt to connect to the network (even if it does not grant internet right away). Usually the MAC Address is in the device's network settings or advanced settings. Unfortunately, we cannot document the process of finding a MAC address of every smart device as there is an ever growing list of devices every day being given WiFi/internet capabilities. We encourage you to search the internet for where to find the MAC address of your device.

   Try searching YouTube or Google with: "How to find the MAC address for my brand name, model name". Example: "How to find the MAC address for my Sony PS5".

   If you run into issues, check to make sure the article is recently updated or that your device is in need of any updates.

   You may find two MAC addresses for your device. One for "Wireless", and one for "Wired". If you are trying to connect via an Ethernet port connected to the wall, you will use the "Wired" one. If you are trying to connect using the WiFi, use the "Wireless" one.

   Some devices are configured often by default to 'hide' your devices MAC Address, which will cause you to need to re-register it every day or on a set interval. Most Apple devices do this by default and it will need to be disabled. This is called ""Private" or "Randomized" MAC Address, or sometimes also known as "Private WiFi Address". Before you register your device, you may need to check you devices settings to verify that this is turned off or else your connect experience will be inconisistent & unreliable.

2. Next you will log into https://www-register.nmu.edu/device using your NMU username (the first part of your NMU Email Address, everything up to the @ symbol) and your NMU Password (same password you use for MyNMU, EduCat, Gmail, etc).
3. Read the NMU Copyright Policy and click Continue.
4. Read the NMU Copyright Violations and click I have read the statements above.
5. Read the NMU Acceptable Use Policy and click Accept.
6. If prompted, complete the Acceptable Use Policy Test and click Submit Answers. Below is an example of one possible test you may be given.
7. Finally, enter the device's MAC address and the type of device (see step #1 if do not know know your MAC Address).For "Type of Device" either use "Gamebox" or "Other"; the field is only there
8. Click Register and if successful you should get a message saying so.
