You can quickly change the width of a column by moving the cursor to the vertical line between column headers (A, B, C,...), hold down the left mouse button and drag to the left or right.

When working with long spreadsheets you can keep the first line of a row or column viewable by splitting the windows. To do this click:

  • Window
  • Split

Drag the double line to the end of the cell you wish to remain visible.

  • the correctly formatted cell
  • the paintbrush tool called "Format Painter"
  • the cell to be formatted

Norton Antivirus

It is a good idea to periodically scan your computer for viruses. If you connect a NMU issued computer to the network it automatically updates the latest version of the antivirus to the computer. To scan the computer for viruses double-click:

  • the gold shield icon on the lower right corner of your computer screen
  • under Scan, click Scan Computer
  • check C and D
  • click the Scan button

Note, this process takes about 30-40 minutes

If a virus is found it will be placed in quarantine. You can delete the virus from quarantine by clicking:

  • View
  • the virus(es) listed in the quarantine screen
  • the red X above the quarantine screen

You can change the menu settings to show full menus by clicking:

You can make comments in student papers and spreadsheets by using the Comment function. Click:

  • Insert

Microsoft offers "Office Assistances" to "help" you with using an application. Their names are:

  • Clippit - a paper clip

  • Rocky - a dog

If they get too obnoxious for you just move your cursor over them, right-click and click hide. You can bring them back by clicking:

You can create the appearance of a frame around an image by placing a box over the image, then placing the box behind the image.

  1. Create the box by clicking the box drawing tool and draw a box over the image.
  2. With the box highlighted, move your mouse to the lower left corner to the Draw Menu and click:

You can modify the color scheme of a presentation by clicking:

You can modify the layout of a slide by clicking the perimeter box of an area twice until the outline turns to little dots. Then using the curser or the arrows on your keyboard, move the box anywhere on the screen you wish. You can also adjust the size of the box by clicking one of the perimeter points and dragging it to the desired size.

It is a good idea to download a backup copy of the grades listed in WebCT each time you add new grades. From the course hompage click:

  • Manage course
  • Manage students
  • Download (button)
  • Record separator: can be comma or tab
  • Download
  • Save
  • Check "Save in " and "Filename
  • Save

(The file will be saved as a .txt file and can be opened in Excel)

When creating a new column in the Manage Students section the default is to place the new column as the last one on the right.

You can select the placement of a new column be clicking the box on top of an existing column and the new column will be created to the left of that column. Log-on to WebCT, go to a course and click:

  • Mange Course
  • Mangage Students
  • Advanced Options
  • Modify Columns
  • Go
  • Click the box on top of the column you wish the new column to be placed beside.
  • Add column
  • Go
  • Type a new for your new column
  • Select type of column
  • Add

There are text boxes on the course homepage you may use to communicate reminders, changes, etc. On the homepage click:

  • Designer Options
  • The radio button beside "Welcome to WebCT"
  • Scroll down pass the icons to "Modify selected textblock or add text"
  • Click the radio button beside "Edit textblock"
  • Go
  • Make your changes in the Heading box.
  • You can change the size, color and style of font.

Leave the information about your e-mail and telephone number

Please do not use a huge font size. It will eat up too much space on the screen. It is what is known as "overkill"

The names of students who withdraw from your class will remain in the Manage Students area of your course with 2 indicators beside their name. A plus sign (+) and a star (*). These students no longer have access to your WebCT course. If you wish to delete their names from the Manage Students area then click:

  • the link to their name
  • press the Delete button
  • 2 warning windows will appear, click "OK"to both

Deleting students has to be done one at a time.

When in doubt, "right-click".

Save time clicking menu options by using the "right button".

Example, in Word if you want to copy a sentence:

  • Highlight it
  • Move the mouse over the highlighted line and "right-click"
  • The Edit functions appear and you can select your options without have to spend so much time and effort moving to the top of the screen.

Try it, you will like it!

You can create a Screen Shot of your computer screen by pressing the Print Screen or the PrtSc key on your laptop's keyboard

Once you have pressed the key then open a program such as PowerPoint or Word and click:

  • Edit
  • Paste

Your Screen Shot now appears.

*BONUS* - If you hold now the Alt key when you press the PrtSc key the Start Menu and shortcut row will be omitted. Pretty cool!

Windows XP allows you to view windows either cascading or tiled (horizontally or vertically). Right-click the window bar at the bottom of your screen. Cascade is the default. You can click tile or desktop.

When working with long documents you can save time scrolling by using keyboard commands to move up and down your documents. Try the following:

  • To move to the end of a document press Ctrl and End
  • To move to the beginning of a document press Ctrl and Home
  • To move down one screen press PgDn
  • To move up on screen press PgUp

Normal - will show

Web - will show

  • text wraps to fit the window
  • backgrounds
  • places graphics on the screen

Print - will show

  • precisely as it will print
  • page breaks

  • footers
  • pictures

Outline - will show

outline of document (good for rearranging sections of text)
