Using Microsoft Word or any other "non-web" files in WebCT
Uploading Word (.doc) files into WebCT is not a problem as long as the students have access to Microsoft Word on their computers. Commonly used programs that WebCT cannot open are:
If you use any of these programs in your WebCT course(s), you will need to require your students have access to these programs on their computers. REMINDER: Part-time NMU students are not required to participate in the TLC laptop program. It is recommended you list these software packages in your course syllabus as requirements for the course. WebCT is a web-based product, so any web pages (.htm or .html) file will open quickly in WebCT. PDF (.pdf) files will also open quickly in WebCT. Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files will take longer to open. WebCT cannot open these files but will direct the student's computer to search for a program on their local computer that will. WebCT operates as a bridge to provide a method for students to retrieve these non-web files. Students will then have the option to open or save the file to their computer. Any non-web file will be prompted to open or save and may be blocked by the Pop-Up Blocker. To turn off the Pop-Up Blocker on Internet Explorer, click Tools to Pop-up Blocker. Click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker. In order to download non-web files. Enable Downloads by clicking Tools to Internet Options.
