All NMU computers are pre-configured to work with Charter's cable modem system. You can travel from NMU to home with your computer and plug it in both places without changing any settings. If you are having problems connecting to NMU through Charter see the solutions below.
When your E-mail program is set to send messages through a direct NMU connection (dial-up or an on-campus network connection), it cannot send them through a Charter connection. When it is set to send messages through Charter, it cannot send them through a direct NMU connection (dial-up or on-campus network connection).
There are four ways to solve this problem:
- Solution 1: Set your E-mail program to send messages only when you are connected via dial-up or the campus network (but not via Charter).
- Solution 2: Set your E-mail program to send messages only when your connected via Charter (but not via dial-up or the campus network).
- Solution 3: Reconfigure your E-mail settings every time you change the type of connection (for example, change it to work with Charter when you go home, then change it to work with the campus network when you go back to campus).
- Solution 4: Access your E-mail through the Web.
Set your E-mail program to send messages only when you are connected via dial-up or the campus network (but not via Charter):
- Open your E-mail program.
- Change the SMTP (Outgoing) Mail Server name from chartermi.net to pop.mail.nmu.edu.
For information about how to find the SMTP server setting in your E-mail program, search for "SMTP" in the program's help file.
Solution 2

- Change the SMTP (Outgoing) Mail Server name from pop.mail.nmu.edu to chartermi.net.
For information about how to find the SMTP server setting in your E-mail program, search for "SMTP" in the program's help file.
