DX-250 WiMAX Modem

These instructions are for greenpacket DX-250 Wimax Modems purchased from the NMU Micro Repair Department. See CPE DX-250 WiMAX Modem Setup (Library Users) for WiMAX that are checked out from the NMU Library.

  • NOTE: Never press the reset button near the Ethernet connections otherwise the DX-250 WiMAX Modem would have to be reprogrammed to work again with NMU WiMAX.

DX-250 WiMAX Modem Setup

The DX-250 Setup consists of 6 main steps. It is important to do all 6 main steps to assure access to your DX-250 is secured and only used by devices you have authorized to access the WiMAX modem.

A. Connecting the DX-250 WiMAX Modem

  1. Stand the WiMAX modem on a flat surface and remove the cellophane from the WiMAX modem so the cooling vents are open.
  2. Plug the supplied AC power adapter into an AC outlet and to the power connector on the end of the WiMAX modem.
  3. Plug one end of the supplied Ethernet cable into either one of the 2 Ethernet connectors (labeled LAN1 and LAN2) on the end of the WiMAX modem. Note: The smaller RJ11 phone connections available on the end of the WiMAX modem are not supported by NMU.
  4. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet connector of your computer.
  5. If you are using a notebook computer, turn off the wireless at this time.

NOTE

After powering up the WiMAX modem up to three of the antenna lights will turn green.  These lights are used to show the signal strength coming into the WiMAX modem.  If the WiMAX modem only gets one signal light after powering up, power the WiMAX modem off and try again.

B. Logging into the DX-250 WiMAX Modem

Use the following procedure to log into the WiMAX modem:

  1. On the computer connected to the WiMAX modem, open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.
  2. If you are prompted with a “Set Network Location” window, choose Public network.
  3. In the browser’s address or location field, type 192.168.15.1 and press ENTER to display the login screen.
  4. The greenpacket login page is displayed and prompts you for a username and password.
  5. In the Username field enter user, in the Password field enter nmu and click the Login button.

C. DX-250 WiFi Setup

The DX-250 WiMAX Modem has a built in WiFi router that can be used to connect several WiFi devices to the internet via the NMU Wimax connection. The instructions for this step change the SSID to one you can more easily remember and set up an increased level of security that is not a part of the default settings.

It is highly recommended you record the SSID, Passphrase, and Password in the next 2 sections on a notecard or piece of paper that can be taped to the back side of the DX-250 WiMAX Modem for later reference.

If you don’t want to use the built in WiFi router or want to use a separate WiFi router you already own then you can disable the built in WiFi router by proceeding to step E: Disabling the built in WiFi router.
 

  1. To access the WiFi menu, click on the Networking button at the top of the screen.
  2. Click Next at the bottom of the page.
  3. Change the "Use Default" setting at the top of the page to "User Defined"
  4. Enter a unique name Network Service Set Identifier (SSID) in the SSID field. The SSID is a label/name that distinguishes one wireless LAN (Wi-Fi network) from another. The field is case-sensitive and must not exceed 32 characters. Record the SSID you used. The SSID will be needed by devices to access the DX-250 WiMAX modem WiFi connection.
  5. In the Security Setting section set the Security Mode to WPA2-PSK.
  6. Change the Encryp Type to AES.
  7. For the WPAPSK: field choose a Passphrase of 8 to 32 characters. Record the Passphrase you used on the notecard or piece of paper.
  8. Click Apply at the bottom of the page. The DX-250 WiMAX Modem is now secured and ready to register on the NMU network.

D. Changing the password on the DX-250 WiMAX Modem

By default the password used to login to the DX-250 is nmu.  This should be changed to something more secure.

  1. The greenpacket login page is displayed and prompts you for a username and password.
  2. In the Username field enter user, in the Password field enter nmu and click the Login button.
  3. To access the password menu, click on the Personalization button at the top of the screen.
  4. Enter nmu in the old passwd field.
  5. Enter your desired password in the new passwd field. Be sure you have correctly entered the password you want to you without any typos. Record the Passphrase you used on the notecard or piece of paper and tape it to the back side of the DX-250 WiMAX Modem.
  6. Click Apply at the bottom of the page. The DX-250 WiMAX Modem is now secured. Proceed to step F. Registering the DX-250 WiMAX Modem on the NMU Network.

E. Disabling the built in WiFi router (Optional)

If you don’t want to use the built in WiFi router or want to use a separate WiFi router you already own then you can disable the built in WiFi router using the following instructions. Otherwise proceed to step F. Registering the DX-250 WiMAX Modem on the NMU Network.
  1. To access the WiFi menu, click on the Networking button at the top of the screen.
  2. Click the Stop button in the "Start/Stop WiFi" setting at the top of the page.
  3. Click Apply at the bottom of the page. The WiFi on the DX-250 WiMAX Modem has now been turned off.

F. Registering the DX-250 WiMAX Modem on the NMU Network

The WiMAX Modem will need to be registered on the NMU network before it can be used to access the Internet.

  1. On the computer that is connected to the WiMAX Modem, open a web browser.
  2. In the Address or Location field, type register.nmu.edu.
  3. Enter your NMU User ID: and password and click the Sign In button.
  4. Allow the Copyright video to play and then click the Continue button.
  5. Using the scroll bar at the right, read NMU's Computer Network Acceptable Use Policy and then click I Have Read the NMU Acceptable Use Policy button at the bottom.
  6. You now must answer a short test about NMU's Computer Network Acceptable Use Policy that you just read in the previous step. Answer the questions by clicking the buttons corresponding to the correct answers and then click Submit Answers at the bottom of the page.
  7. Your registration is now complete. It will take about 10 minutes before you have full access to the network. For security, click the Logout button on the final screen or simply close your browser window.
  8. If you were using a NMU notebook computer, don't forget to turn the wireless switch back on.

NOTE: Never press the reset button near the Ethernet connections otherwise the DX-250 WiMAX Modem would have to be reprogrammed to work again with NMU WiMAX.
