Changing default programs in Windows 8

The NMU Twist image uses Windows 8 Metro Apps (the programs available in the tile interface) associated with Mailto:, PDF, MP3, JPG, PNG file types and protocols. This might cause confusion for people who open those types of files while using the Windows 8 desktop interface. The Metro App will open the file but it isn't intuitive how to close the app (drag the cursor from the top to the bottom of the screen) or how to get back to the Windows 8 desktop after the Metro App is closed (Press the Windows button under the screen or on the keyboard).

You can change the applications associated with those files type and protocols so that they open using Windows 8 desktop applications without having you press the Windows button to get back to the Windows 8 desktop. Here's how:

  1. Go to Start and type Default Programs in the search field and press Enter. The Set Default Programs window will be displayed.

  2. Choose Set your default programs.

  3. Select the applications you want to use as defaults and click Select this program as default for each one.

  4. Once you are done click OK at the bottom right corner of the window. Here's a list of recommended changes if you want to use desktop applications in place of Windows 8 Metro Apps for most files:
  • Adobe Reader
  • Outlook Desktop
  • Paint
  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Photo Viewer
